Azalea Gerhardt Nicolai

Azalea Gerhardt Nicolai is a compact evergreen azalea grown for its tidy, mounding habit and reliable spring display. The flowers open in generous clusters and smother the plant for several weeks from around September. This is a dependable garden azalea that holds its shape well from year to year without heavy intervention. Mature size is typically around 1 to 1.2m high and wide.

This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a mixed shrub border. Plant several together to build a solid, even mass of colour, or use a single specimen to anchor a shaded corner. It also grows well in a large container on a deck or patio.

Grow Gerhardt Nicolai in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil with good organic content. Work compost through the bed at planting time and apply a layer of mulch to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid hot, exposed positions.

Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells thereafter. Trim lightly after flowering to keep the plant tidy. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this azalea is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.

Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to maintain a tidy shape. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead or crossing stems as you go.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm and will not affect next season's flowering.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second feed after flowering supports new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the roots are shallow and sensitive.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and during any dry spells. A mulch layer helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Good drainage and airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil raises the risk of Phytophthora root rot. In humid, still conditions, watch for powdery mildew and petal blight. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce fungal pressure.
