Notify MeAzalea Comtesse de Kerchove is a graceful evergreen shrub prized for its masses of soft white flowers, each lightly flushed with pink and occasionally marked with a pale yellow throat. Flowering in late winter to early spring, it creates a luminous presence in shaded areas, complemented by its fine-textured, dark green foliage.
Ideal for brightening woodland borders, shaded patios, or as an understorey feature beneath trees, this azalea complements traditional, cottage, and Japanese-style gardens. It thrives in dappled light or morning sun with protection from strong afternoon heat. Plant in acidic, well-draining soil and maintain consistent moisture. Allow 60–90cm spacing for optimal growth and airflow.
Mature size: Grows to approximately 80cm high and 80cm wide.
Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage bushy growth. Avoid heavy pruning as azaleas form flower buds on old wood.
Deadheading: Gently remove spent flowers by hand to tidy the plant and prevent seed formation, which can sap energy.
Fertilising: Apply an acid-loving plant fertiliser in early spring and again after flowering. Avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers, which can harm root development.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells and the establishment phase. Azaleas dislike drying out but also need good drainage to prevent root rot.
Pest Control: Watch for lace bugs and spider mites, particularly on the underside of leaves. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Disease Management: Azaleas can suffer from petal blight and root rot. Remove affected flowers promptly and ensure good airflow. Avoid overhead watering and improve drainage to reduce fungal risks.
