Azalea Cocade is a compact evergreen azalea with single bright orange flowers. The blooms open in spring and cover the plant in a bold, even display. This is a reliable azalea with a tidy, rounded habit, suited to smaller gardens and containers. Mature plants reach around 1 to 1.2m high and wide.
This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a mixed shrub border. Group several plants together for a solid sweep of colour, or use a single specimen to lift a shaded corner. The bright orange tone pairs well with white or yellow azaleas for contrast, and also works alongside dark-leaved shrubs.
Grow Azalea Cocade in part shade, or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Work compost through the bed at planting and mulch well to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid hot, exposed positions, which stress the plant and reduce flowering.
Water regularly through the first summer and during any dry spell after that. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Like all azaleas, Cocade is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to keep the plant compact and shapely. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid hard pruning. Remove any dead or crossing stems at the same time.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser made for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second feed after flowering supports new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the shallow roots are sensitive.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and during dry spells. A layer of mulch holds moisture and protects the shallow roots.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check leaf undersides regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Good drainage and air flow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil invites Phytophthora root rot, so ensure free-draining conditions. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce the risk of petal blight and leaf gall.
