Azalea Clarissa
Azalea Clarissa is a compact evergreen azalea with salmon-pink flowers. The single, frilled blooms open in spring and cover the plant in a soft, even display. This is a reliable azalea with a tidy, rounded habit, maturing to around 0.8 to 1m high and wide, making it a good fit for smaller spaces and containers.
Clarissa suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a mixed shrub border. Plant it in groups for a massed display, or use individual plants to add soft colour to a shaded corner. The salmon-pink tone pairs well with white, cream, or deep crimson azaleas nearby.
Grow this azalea in part shade, or in morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost. Mulch around the base to keep the shallow roots cool and retain moisture. Avoid exposed, hot positions, which put the plant under stress.
Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells. Feed in spring with an azalea and camellia fertiliser to support strong flowering. Like all azaleas, Clarissa is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in households with pets.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to maintain a tidy, compact shape. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid hard pruning. Remove any dead or crossing stems at the same time.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second feed after flowering supports new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the roots are shallow and sensitive.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and during dry spells. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check leaf undersides regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Good drainage and airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil invites Phytophthora root rot, so ensure free-draining conditions at planting. Petal blight can affect flowers in warm, humid conditions. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce fungal risk.
