Azalea Charlie
Azalea Charlie is a compact evergreen azalea noted for its deep-pink flowers with subtle ruffling and a contrasting darker throat. Blooming from mid to late Spring, the vivid blooms stand out against its dark green foliage, offering a bold splash of colour to shaded areas.
Ideal for borders, woodland gardens, or container planting, Charlie thrives in part shade with moist, well-drained, acidic soil. It benefits from regular watering and protection from harsh afternoon sun. Space plants 70–90cm apart to allow for dense, even growth.
Grows to around 90cm tall and wide, forming a tidy, rounded shrub with striking seasonal colour.
Trimming: Lightly prune just after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead or straggly growth. Avoid hard pruning, as azaleas flower on old wood.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers by hand to tidy the plant and encourage better flowering the following season.
Fertilising: Use an acid-loving plant fertiliser in early spring and again after flowering. Avoid overfeeding, as this can damage roots.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during establishment and dry periods. Azaleas prefer cool, moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Mulch annually to retain moisture and regulate temperature.
Pest Control: Watch for lace bugs, thrips, and spider mites—especially in warm, dry weather. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Susceptible to petal blight and root rot. Remove affected flowers or foliage promptly, and ensure good drainage and airflow. Avoid overhead watering to help prevent fungal issues.
