Azalea Centenary Heritage

Azalea Centenary Heritage is a compact evergreen azalea grown for its neat, rounded habit and reliable spring display. The flowers open in clusters across the plant, creating a full and even effect from season to season. This is a well-mannered azalea that stays tidy with minimal attention, making it a good choice for smaller spaces and mixed plantings. Mature size sits around 1 to 1.2m high and wide.

This azalea suits a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a shaded mixed shrub border. Use it in small groups for a massed effect, or as a single specimen to anchor a shaded corner. It also grows well in a large container on a deck or patio.

Grow Centenary Heritage in part shade, or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with compost and organic matter. Mulch around the base to keep roots cool and retain moisture. Avoid hot, exposed positions and waterlogged ground.

Water regularly through the first summer to establish the plant, then during dry spells. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, Azalea Centenary Heritage is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.

Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to keep the plant compact and well shaped. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead or crossing stems at the same time.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser made for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A second light feed after flowering supports new growth. Do not over-feed, as the roots are shallow and sensitive.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and during dry spells. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check leaf undersides regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Free-draining soil and good airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil increases the risk of Phytophthora root rot. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce the chance of fungal issues such as petal blight.
