Azalea Autumn Jewel
Azalea Autumn Jewel is a compact, evergreen azalea offering soft, orchid-pink flowers with delicate frilled edges and a light scent. Flowering in Spring with a reliable encore in Autumn, it brings lasting colour and charm to the garden across multiple seasons. Its fine, glossy green foliage may develop a purple tinge in colder weather.
Ideal for mixed borders, low hedging, or container planting, Autumn Jewel thrives in part shade with acidic, well-drained soil. Regular watering and protection from harsh afternoon sun will support healthy flowering. Space 60–80cm apart to allow its natural, rounded form to develop.
Matures to approximately 90cm tall and 90cm wide, forming a compact, floriferous shrub with multi-season appeal.
Trimming: Lightly prune just after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead or straggly growth. Avoid hard pruning, as azaleas flower on old wood.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers by hand to tidy the plant and encourage better flowering the following season.
Fertilising: Use an acid-loving plant fertiliser in early spring and again after flowering. Avoid overfeeding, as this can damage roots.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during establishment and dry periods. Azaleas prefer cool, moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Mulch annually to retain moisture and regulate temperature.
Pest Control: Watch for lace bugs, thrips, and spider mites—especially in warm, dry weather. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: Susceptible to petal blight and root rot. Remove affected flowers or foliage promptly, and ensure good drainage and airflow. Avoid overhead watering to help prevent fungal issues.
