Azalea Autumn Amethyst

Azalea Autumn Amethyst is a versatile, evergreen azalea known for its vibrant lavender-purple flowers that bloom in Spring and often repeat in Autumn. Its small, trumpet-shaped flowers contrast beautifully with the fine, glossy green foliage, which may take on a purplish tint in cooler months.

Ideal for borders, containers, and low hedging, this variety thrives in part shade with acidic, well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering during dry spells. Its compact size and multi-season interest make it well-suited to smaller gardens. Space 60–80cm apart for a full, tidy form.

Matures to around 90cm tall and 1m wide, forming a dense, rounded shrub with repeat flowering and year-round foliage interest.

Trimming: Lightly prune just after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead or straggly growth. Avoid hard pruning, as azaleas flower on old wood.

Deadheading: Remove spent flowers by hand to tidy the plant and encourage better flowering the following season.

Fertilising: Use an acid-loving plant fertiliser in early spring and again after flowering. Avoid overfeeding, as this can damage roots.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during establishment and dry periods. Azaleas prefer cool, moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Mulch annually to retain moisture and regulate temperature.

Pest Control: Watch for lace bugs, thrips, and spider mites—especially in warm, dry weather. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Susceptible to petal blight and root rot. Remove affected flowers or foliage promptly, and ensure good drainage and airflow. Avoid overhead watering to help prevent fungal issues.
