Azalea Anna Kehr is a compact evergreen azalea grown for its double, bright pink flowers. The blooms are full and ruffled, opening in spring to cover the plant in a generous flush of colour. This azalea holds a tidy, rounded habit and matures to around 0.6 to 0.9m high and wide, making it well suited to smaller gardens and containers.
Anna Kehr fits naturally into a cottage garden or a Japanese-style planting. It also works well in a mixed shrub border alongside other azaleas and rhododendrons. Plant several together to form a low, colourful mass, or use a single plant in a pot on a shaded patio. The bright pink pairs well with white or deep red flowering shrubs nearby.
Grow this azalea in part shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil rich in organic matter. Work compost through the bed before planting and mulch the surface to keep roots cool and moist. Avoid exposed, dry positions.
Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells in subsequent years. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, Anna Kehr is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.
Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to keep the plant compact and well shaped. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid cutting back hard. Remove any dead or crossing stems at the same time.
Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can remove spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm and requires no action.
Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser formulated for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second application after flowering encourages healthy new growth. Avoid over-feeding, as the roots are shallow and sensitive.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and during any dry spell. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and protects the shallow root system.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale insects. Check leaf undersides regularly and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil if numbers build.
Disease Management: Good drainage and airflow prevent most problems. Wet or heavy soil increases the risk of Phytophthora root rot. In humid conditions, powdery mildew and petal blight can occur on azaleas; improve airflow and remove affected material promptly. Clear fallen leaves and spent flowers to reduce fungal risk.
