Azalea Ambrosius is a compact evergreen azalea with medium-sized, double blooms in dark carmine. The flowers have a full, layered form that gives each bloom more weight and texture than a single flower. It is a reliable spring-flowering azalea that builds a dense display across the whole plant. Mature size is typically around 0.8 to 1m high and wide.

This azalea suits a cottage garden or a Japanese-style planting, and it works well in a mixed shrub border. The dark carmine colour pairs with white or soft pink azaleas to create contrast, or plant several Ambrosius together for a solid block of rich colour. It also performs well in containers on a sheltered patio or deck.

Grow Ambrosius in part shade, or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil enriched with organic matter. Work compost through the bed at planting and mulch well to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid exposed, hot, or dry positions.

Water regularly through the first summer and during dry spells thereafter. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so take care in pet households.

Trimming: Lightly prune just after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead or straggly growth. Avoid hard pruning, as azaleas flower on old wood.

Deadheading: Remove spent flowers by hand to tidy the plant and encourage better flowering the following season.

Fertilising: Use an acid-loving plant fertiliser in early spring and again after flowering. Avoid overfeeding, as this can damage roots.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during establishment and dry periods. Azaleas prefer cool, moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Mulch annually to retain moisture and regulate temperature.

Pest Control: Watch for lace bugs, thrips, and spider mites—especially in warm, dry weather. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Susceptible to petal blight and root rot. Remove affected flowers or foliage promptly, and ensure good drainage and airflow. Avoid overhead watering to help prevent fungal issues.
