Azalea Addy Wery

Azalea Addy Wery is a compact evergreen azalea grown for its vivid deep orange-red flowers. The blooms open in spring and smother the plant in a dense, even display. This is a Kurume-type azalea, prized for its tidy habit and dependable colour year after year. Mature size sits around 1 to 1.2m high and wide, which suits smaller gardens, borders, and containers.

This azalea earns its place in a cottage garden, a Japanese-style planting, or a mixed shrub border. Plant it in groups for a solid block of colour, or use single plants to lift a shaded corner. It also performs well in pots on a patio or deck. The warm tone pairs well with white or soft pink azaleas for contrast.

Grow Addy Wery in part shade, or morning sun with afternoon shade. It needs free-draining, acidic soil with plenty of organic matter. Work compost through the bed at planting and mulch well to keep the shallow roots cool and moist. Avoid hot, dry, exposed spots.

Water regularly through the first summer and in dry spells after that. Like all azaleas and rhododendrons, this plant is toxic to cats, dogs, and horses if eaten, so keep that in mind in pet households.

Trimming: Trim lightly straight after flowering in late spring to shape the plant and keep it compact. Azaleas flower on old wood, so avoid hard pruning. Remove any dead or crossing stems.

Deadheading: Deadheading is not essential. You can pick off spent blooms by hand to tidy the plant, but leaving them does no harm.

Fertilising: Feed in spring with a fertiliser made for azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons. A light second feed after flowering supports new growth. Do not over-feed, as the roots are shallow.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, never waterlogged. Water deeply through summer and in dry spells. Mulch holds moisture and protects the shallow roots.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids, thrips, two-spotted mite, and scale. Check leaf undersides and treat early with a suitable spray or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Good drainage and airflow prevent most issues. Wet, heavy soil invites Phytophthora root rot. In humid, still conditions watch for powdery mildew, and check for leaf gall, picking off any pale swollen growths and binning them. Clear fallen leaves to reduce fungal risk.
