Acradenia frankliniae

Acradenia frankliniae, commonly known as Whiteywood or Mountain Maple, is a charming evergreen shrub native to Tasmania. This attractive plant is celebrated for its glossy, dark green leaves and clusters of small, white flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. The delicate flowers emit a pleasant fragrance, adding an extra sensory dimension to its visual appeal.

Whiteywood is well-suited for use in mixed borders, woodland gardens, and as an understory plant in larger garden settings. It thrives in well-drained, acidic to neutral soils with consistent moisture levels. Planting in partial shade to full shade helps protect its delicate foliage from scorching in hotter climates, making it an excellent choice for shaded garden areas. Space plants approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for their natural spread and to ensure good air circulation.

At maturity, Acradenia frankliniae reaches a height and spread of about 2 to 3 metres. Its compact and bushy growth habit, along with its lush foliage and fragrant flowers, make it an excellent addition to gardens aiming for a naturalistic or woodland feel. Its resilience and year-round beauty provide continuous interest and structure in the garden.

Trimming: Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches as needed.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers which can lead to excessive foliage at the expense of flowers.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in extreme dry periods. Ensure the soil is well-drained to prevent waterlogging.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but occasionally check for aphids and scale insects. If detected, treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Disease Management: Monitor for signs of root rot, such as yellowing leaves and poor growth. Ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering to prevent this issue. Remove and dispose of any infected plant material responsibly.
