Abelia Snow Showers
Notify MeAbelia 'Snow Showers' is a compact, semi-evergreen shrub prized for its arching branches and masses of small, white, bell-shaped flowers that appear from late spring through to autumn. The flowers are lightly fragrant and attract bees and butterflies, while the glossy green foliage adds year-round structure. With a naturally mounding habit reaching around 60-90 cm high and 80-100 cm wide, it’s ideal for borders, low hedging, and containers in cottage, coastal, or low-maintenance garden styles.
Thrives in full sun to partial shade with well-draining soil. Tolerant of drought and coastal conditions once established. Space plants 60-80 cm apart for dense coverage. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a neat shape and encourage fresh growth. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Hardy in most conditions, though some leaf drop may occur in colder regions.
Trimming: Lightly prune in late winter or early spring to maintain a compact shape and remove any dead, damaged, or spindly growth. After flowering, a light trim can also help promote bushier growth and tidy the plant.
Deadheading: Not required, as this variety is self-cleaning and naturally drops spent flowers. However, removing old blooms can improve overall appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. In poorer soils, a light top-up in mid-summer can be beneficial.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and during prolonged dry spells. Once established, Abelia ‘Snow Showers’ is relatively drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture in well-drained soil.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though aphids or scale may occasionally appear. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Abelia is typically disease-resistant. To avoid fungal issues, ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering. Remove any yellowing or damaged foliage promptly.
