Rose The Lady Gardener
Rosa 'The Lady Gardener' is a captivating English shrub rose bred by David Austin, featuring large, full-petalled flowers in a rich apricot-orange that fade softly towards pale apricot at the edges. With a strong, tea rose fragrance carrying hints of cedarwood and vanilla, this variety flowers prolifically from late spring through to autumn and offers excellent health and repeat performance.
Well-suited to borders, rose gardens, or as a fragrant feature in larger containers. Complements cottage, formal, and romantic garden styles.
Thrives in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Plant in a sheltered spot and allow spacing of around 1–1.2 metres to support its broad, rounded growth.
Mature size: Reaches approximately 1.2–1.4 metres tall and wide, forming a full, rounded shrub.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain a balanced, open shape and encourage strong new growth. Remove any dead, damaged, or weak stems, and reduce flowering shoots by one-third.
Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage repeat flowering and keep the shrub looking tidy throughout the season.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced rose fertiliser in early spring, followed by a second application after the first flush. Avoid feeding beyond late summer to prevent frost-sensitive growth.
Watering: Water deeply during dry spells, especially while establishing. Maintain consistently moist, well-drained soil and avoid wetting foliage.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, thrips, and rose slugs. Treat infestations early using insecticidal soap or neem oil, and encourage natural predators like ladybirds.
Disease Management: Generally healthy, but may be vulnerable to black spot and mildew in humid conditions. Prune to ensure good air circulation, remove any affected leaves, and use a preventative fungicide if necessary.
