Rose Piece of Cake
Rosa 'Piece of Cake' is a delightful floribunda rose featuring clusters of soft pink flowers with a pale cream centre. Its lightly ruffled petals give it a charming and whimsical appearance, while its compact, bushy growth ensures it’s easy to maintain. The flowers are lightly fragrant and appear in abundance, providing long-lasting colour from late spring through to autumn. Perfect for cottage, formal, or romantic gardens, this versatile rose works beautifully in borders, as a low hedge, or in patio containers. Its soft hues also make it ideal for pairing with other pastel-toned plants. Preferred garden area: Thrives in full sun with well-drained, fertile soil. Regular watering is required, particularly in dry spells, but avoid waterlogging. Space plants 50–60 cm apart for optimum growth and airflow. Mature size: Grows to approximately 1 m in height and 0.8 m in width, maintaining a neat, bushy form.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Remove dead, weak, or crossing stems to improve airflow and structure. Lightly trim after the first flowering flush to encourage repeat blooms.
Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to promote continuous flowering. Cut just above a healthy leaf set to stimulate new growth.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced rose fertiliser in early spring as new growth appears. Feed again after the first major flowering and once more in late summer to support healthy blooms.
Watering: Water deeply once or twice a week during dry spells, ensuring the soil stays moist but well-drained. Newly planted roses need consistent watering until established.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, spider mites, and thrips. Use insecticidal soap, neem oil, or encourage natural predators like ladybirds to manage infestations.
Disease Management: Susceptible to black spot and powdery mildew. Improve air circulation by spacing plants properly and removing fallen leaves. Apply a fungicide if needed and avoid overhead watering to reduce disease risk.
