Rosa banksiae Lutea, commonly known as the Yellow Banksia Rose, is a vigorous, thornless climber celebrated for its abundant clusters of small, double, soft yellow flowers that appear in early to mid-spring. With a light fragrance and semi-evergreen foliage, it provides a cheerful and long-lasting seasonal display, ideal for adding height and movement to the garden.
Suited to cottage, Mediterranean, and romantic garden styles, it thrives when trained over fences, pergolas, or archways, and can also be used as a groundcover on banks or large open spaces.
Plant in full sun in well-drained soil with moderate moisture. Minimal pruning is required—trim lightly after flowering to maintain form and support healthy growth. Provide a sturdy structure and allow room for its expansive habit.
Mature size: Typically grows 4–6 metres high and spreads 3–5 metres wide when supported or left to ramble.
Trimming: Prune lightly immediately after flowering in late spring to maintain shape and encourage vigorous new growth. Remove any dead, weak, or congested stems. Avoid hard pruning, as this variety flowers on old wood.
Deadheading: Not necessary, as this rose flowers once a year and does not repeat. Spent blooms can be removed for tidiness if desired.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced rose fertiliser in early spring, and again after flowering to support continued healthy growth. Mulch with compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil and retain moisture.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is quite drought-tolerant but will benefit from deep watering during extended dry periods to support overall plant health.
Pest Control: Typically pest-free, though aphids may appear on new spring growth. Treat with insecticidal soap or a strong spray of water if needed.
Disease Management: Very resistant to black spot, rust, and mildew. Maintain good airflow and remove any damaged or discoloured foliage to prevent occasional fungal issues.
