Rosa banksiae The Pearl is a vigorous, thornless climbing rose known for its clusters of soft blush-pink, double flowers that appear in abundance during early to mid-spring. Lightly fragrant and airy in appearance, the flowers soften to near white as they mature, creating a romantic and graceful display. Its lush, semi-evergreen foliage and sprawling habit make it ideal for covering large structures with ease.
Perfect for cottage, romantic, and Mediterranean garden styles, it can be trained over arbours, trellises, fences, or allowed to cascade freely over walls or slopes.
Thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil with moderate moisture. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage strong growth. Provide sturdy support and allow generous space for its rambling nature.
Mature size: Grows 4–6 metres high and spreads 3–5 metres wide when supported or left to trail.
Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering in late spring to shape the plant and remove any dead, weak, or crossing stems. As it flowers on old wood, avoid hard pruning, which may reduce next season’s display. Train long canes along supports if grown as a climber.
Deadheading: Not required, as it is a once-flowering rose. However, removing spent clusters can enhance the plant's appearance.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced rose fertiliser, and again after flowering to support healthy growth. Apply a layer of compost or well-rotted manure around the base to enrich the soil and conserve moisture.
Watering: Provide regular water during establishment. Once mature, it is drought-tolerant but will benefit from deep watering during long dry periods to maintain vigour.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though young growth may attract aphids in spring. Use insecticidal soap or a firm spray of water to manage minor infestations.
Disease Management: Very resistant to common rose diseases such as black spot and mildew. Maintain good airflow and remove any damaged or yellowing foliage to prevent occasional fungal issues.
