Viscaria vulgaris, also known as German Catchfly, is a clump-forming annual or short-lived perennial prized for its vibrant magenta-pink, five-petalled flowers held on slender stems above narrow green foliage. Flowering from late spring through early summer, it brings a lively burst of colour to borders, cottage gardens, and wildflower-style plantings. Growing to approximately 40-60 cm high and 20-30 cm wide, its upright, airy habit works well in informal groupings or as a soft vertical accent.
Best grown in full sun with free-draining, moderately fertile soil. Space plants 20-30 cm apart to allow airflow and support upright growth. Deadhead to encourage extended flowering or allow to self-seed for naturalised displays. Drought-tolerant once established and well suited to low-maintenance plantings.
Trimming: Cut back flowering stems after the first flush to encourage a second round of flowering and prevent self-seeding. At the end of the season, trim down spent growth to tidy the plant.
Deadheading: Regular deadheading will prolong the flowering period and help maintain a neat, compact form.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to support healthy growth and flowering, especially in poor soils.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in prolonged dry spells. Viscaria prefers moderately moist, well-drained soil-avoid waterlogging.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though aphids may occasionally appear. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Good drainage and air circulation will help prevent fungal issues such as mildew. Remove any affected foliage promptly and avoid overhead watering.
