Vinca Minor Elizabeth Cran
Notify MeVinca minor 'Elizabeth Cran' is a hardy, evergreen ground cover known for its attractive trailing habit and vibrant violet-blue flowers that appear from early to mid-spring, with occasional flowering through the warmer months. Its glossy green foliage forms a dense, low mat, making it excellent for suppressing weeds on banks, under trees, or in shaded borders. Growing to around 10-15 cm high and spreading up to 60-90 cm wide, it suits woodland, cottage, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Thrives in partial to full shade with well-draining soil but is adaptable to a range of conditions. Space plants 30-40 cm apart for even coverage. Drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance-trim back as needed to control spread or tidy growth. Avoid waterlogged areas for best performance.
Trimming: Lightly trim in early spring to control spread and shape the plant, especially if it's used as groundcover. You can also shear back after flowering to encourage fresh growth and tidy up straggly stems.
Deadheading: Not necessary, as Vinca minor is self-cleaning. However, trimming after flowering can enhance appearance and limit self-seeding.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser. In poor soils, a light top-up in mid-summer can support lush foliage and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Vinca minor ‘Elizabeth Cran’ is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering in extended dry periods. Prefers moist, well-drained soil.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, aphids or vine weevils may appear-treat with insecticidal soap or appropriate controls if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues such as leaf spot. Avoid overhead watering and remove any discoloured or damaged foliage promptly. Avoid overly wet conditions to reduce the risk of root rot.
