Notify MeVinca minor Blue Sapphire is a vibrant, ground-hugging perennial prized for its striking contrast of creamy-edged, variegated green foliage and vivid periwinkle-blue flowers. Flowering from early Spring through late Summer, this variety brings dynamic texture and colour to shaded garden spaces while serving as a reliable ground cover.
Ideal for brightening up shady borders, underplanting trees, or softening the edges of paths and retaining walls. Suits woodland, cottage, and shaded coastal gardens.
Thrives in partial to full shade with well-draining, moderately moist soil. Space plants 30–40 cm apart for effective ground coverage. Low maintenance and drought-tolerant once established.
Mature size: Grows 10–15 cm high and spreads up to 1 m across.
Trimming: Lightly trim in late winter or early spring to encourage compact growth and control spread. This helps maintain its low, mounding form and prevents it from becoming too woody.
Deadheading: Not required, as it self-cleans.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. For a denser groundcover, a light liquid feed every 6–8 weeks during the growing season can promote vigour.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though watch for aphids or spider mites in hot, dry conditions. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Susceptible to fungal leaf spots, particularly in damp, humid conditions. Look for discoloured or wilting foliage. Improve air circulation and avoid overhead watering. Remove and dispose of affected leaves to reduce spread.
