Verbena Meteor Shower
Notify MeVerbena bonariensis Meteor Shower is a compact, upright perennial producing clusters of small, violet-purple flowers on branching stems from late spring through to autumn. Its airy structure and long flowering season make it ideal for borders, cottage gardens, and pollinator-friendly plantings.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Tolerates heat, drought, and light frost once established. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous flowering. Cut back in late winter or early spring to maintain a tidy shape. Space plants 40 to 50 centimetres apart for best effect.
Grows to around 60 to 80 centimetres tall and 50 centimetres wide.
Trimming: Trim back spent flower stems regularly to encourage continuous flowering and a compact habit. In late winter or early spring, cut the plant back to the base to stimulate fresh growth.
Deadheading: Remove faded flower heads to prolong flowering and reduce self-seeding.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. In poor soils, a liquid feed every four to six weeks during the growing season will support healthy growth and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering in extended dry periods. Ensure well-drained soil.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally monitor for aphids on new growth and treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow to prevent powdery mildew, especially in humid conditions. Avoid overhead watering and remove any discoloured or damaged foliage to maintain plant health.
