Statice Perezii is a striking perennial known for its broad, glossy green foliage and tall stems of vivid purple-blue flowers with papery texture. Flowering from late Spring through Summer, it brings long-lasting colour and structure, both in the garden and as a cut or dried flower.
Ideal for coastal and dry gardens, it performs beautifully in borders, gravel gardens, and Mediterranean-style plantings. Its architectural form also suits contemporary landscapes and mixed perennial beds.
Plant in a full sun position with well-drained soil and low to moderate moisture. Allow space for air movement and avoid overly wet conditions. Space plants approximately 40–60 cm apart.
Mature size: Forms a bold clump around 60–90 cm tall and wide.
Trimming: Remove spent flower stems and any damaged or yellowing leaves to keep the plant tidy and encourage fresh growth. Cut stems back to the base once flowering has finished. Avoid heavy trimming into old growth.
Deadheading: Deadheading helps prolong flowering and keeps the plant looking neat. Snip off faded flower heads regularly before they set seed.
Fertilising: Feed lightly in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding, as too much fertiliser can lead to soft growth and fewer flowers.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase so the root system develops well. Once established, Statice perezii is fairly drought tolerant and usually only needs extra water during extended dry periods. Ensure the soil drains freely, as it does not like sitting wet.
Pest control: This plant is generally low maintenance, but keep an eye out for aphids, slugs and snails on fresh growth. Treat aphids with insecticidal soap if needed, and control slugs and snails with traps or pellets suitable for garden use.
Disease management: Poor drainage and excess moisture can lead to root rot or fungal problems such as leaf spot. Watch for blackened stems, wilting despite damp soil, or spotted foliage. Improve air flow, avoid overhead watering, remove affected growth, and use a suitable fungicide if fungal disease becomes persistent.
