Stachys macrantha Alba
Notify MeStachys macrantha 'Alba' is a clump-forming perennial valued for its elegant white flower spikes and bold, textured green foliage. Flowering from late spring to early summer, the upright stems carry clusters of pure white, tubular flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. Its broad, scalloped leaves form a dense, weed-suppressing ground cover, making it an excellent choice for cottage, woodland, and pollinator-friendly garden styles. Typically reaches 30-45 cm high and spreads 40-60 cm wide.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with moist, well-draining soil. Space plants 30-40 cm apart to allow for natural clump development. Deadhead after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage light reblooming. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and improve soil health. Drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during dry spells.
Trimming: Cut back spent flower stems after flowering to encourage a tidy form and possibly a light rebloom. In late autumn or early winter, trim back all top growth to ground level once the foliage begins to die back.
Deadheading: Regularly deadhead faded white blooms to extend the flowering period and prevent unwanted self-seeding.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, a light liquid feed in mid-summer can help maintain vigour and flowering.
Watering: Water consistently during establishment and during dry spells. Stachys macrantha ‘Alba’ prefers moist, well-drained soil-avoid waterlogging and prolonged dryness.
Pest Control: Slugs and snails may nibble on young foliage-use organic deterrents or traps if needed.
Disease Management: Provide good airflow around the plant to prevent powdery mildew and other fungal issues. Avoid overhead watering and remove any affected or damaged foliage promptly. Mulch to retain moisture while keeping the crown dry.
