Spiraea thunbergii is a fine-textured, deciduous shrub known for its slender, arching branches and masses of small white flowers that cover the plant from late Winter through early Spring. Its narrow, willow-like green leaves turn yellow to orange in Autumn, offering multi-season interest and a delicate, airy presence in the landscape.
Perfect for cottage, Japanese-inspired, or informal garden styles, Spiraea thunbergii is ideal for borders, low hedging, or feature planting. It thrives in full sun to light shade with free-draining soil and benefits from light pruning after flowering to maintain its natural form. Space approximately 80-100 cm apart when planting in groups or as a low hedge.
Forms a graceful, arching shrub approximately 1.2 metres high and 1.5 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune immediately after flowering in late winter or early spring. Lightly shape the plant and remove dead or woody stems to maintain a graceful, arching form. Avoid hard pruning, as next year’s flowers form on old wood.
Deadheading: Not required, as spent flowers fall naturally and do not significantly affect plant health or appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering. In nutrient-poor soils, a second light feed after flowering may help.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Spiraea thunbergii is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Typically pest-free. Occasionally, aphids may appear-treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if necessary.
Disease Management: Rarely troubled by disease. Ensure good airflow through light pruning and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues. Remove any diseased foliage as needed.
