Sisyrinchium Snow Bells, commonly known as White-Eyed Grass, is a compact and delightful perennial that enchants with its pristine, star-shaped white flowers and soft yellow centre. Flowering from late spring through early summer, flowers rise above slender, grass-like foliage, forming neat, clump-forming tufts.
Ideal for rock gardens, borders, and pathways and well-suited for cottage gardens, alpine plantings, and contemporary designs. Use it in containers to brighten patios or as a ground cover in sunny spots. It is a charming companion for other low-growing plants like lavender, thyme, or sedum.
Thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, including sandy or gritty conditions. While it tolerates occasional dry spells once established, regular watering during active growth and flowering is beneficial. Avoid heavy or waterlogged soils. Space plants 15–20 cm apart. At maturity, Snow Bells grows to a height of 15–20 cm and spreads approximately 20–30 cm.
Trimming: Remove spent flower stems after the flowering period to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage fresh growth. Cut back old or damaged foliage in late autumn or early spring.
Deadheading: Regularly deadhead faded flowers to prolong flowering and prevent self-seeding if not desired.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support growth and flowering. Sisyrinchium thrives in moderately fertile, well-drained soils, so minimal feeding is needed.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, then sparingly. Once established, 'Snow Bells' is drought-tolerant and prefers slightly dry, well-drained soil. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Pest Control: Rarely affected by pests, though slugs and snails may occasionally target young foliage. Use organic deterrents or traps if needed.
Disease Management: Generally disease-free. Prevent root rot by ensuring well-drained soil and avoid overwatering.
This delightful perennial produces delicate, white, star-shaped flowers with grass-like foliage, making it perfect for rock gardens, borders, or sunny, well-drained areas of the garden.
