Sisyrinchium angustifolium
Notify MeSisyrinchium angustifolium, commonly known as Blue-eyed Grass, is a clump-forming, evergreen perennial with slender, grass-like foliage and star-shaped violet-blue flowers with bright yellow centres. Flowering from late Spring through to mid-Summer, it adds a soft, meadow-like charm and fine texture to garden borders and informal plantings.
Ideal for cottage, wildflower, or contemporary gardens, Sisyrinchium angustifolium is perfect for edging, rock gardens, or naturalised areas. It thrives in full sun to light shade with moist, free-draining soil and is tolerant of occasional dry spells once established. Space approximately 20-30 cm apart for a natural, spreading effect.
Forms a tidy clump approximately 30-40 cm high and 25-30 cm wide.
Trimming: Cut back flower stems to the base after flowering to tidy the plant and encourage a second flush. In late autumn or early spring, trim away any dead or tired foliage to make way for new growth.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly during the flowering season to prolong flowering and maintain a neat appearance.
Fertilising: Feed with a light application of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can encourage excessive leaf growth at the expense of flowers.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Sisyrinchium angustifolium is moderately drought tolerant but will benefit from occasional watering during extended dry periods. Prefers well-drained soil.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Rarely bothered by insects, but monitor for aphids on tender new growth if conditions are warm and crowded.
Disease Management: Low risk of disease. Avoid overwatering and ensure good drainage to prevent root rot. Remove any yellowing or spotted leaves to maintain plant health and airflow.
