Salvia Amistad is a striking perennial plant that originates from Brazil. It is known for its large, velvety, deep-purple flowers from mid-summer to autumn. The flowers are set on long stems, rising above the lush green foliage. It makes an excellent choice for planting in borders, cottage gardens or as a focal point in a container.
Aside from its aesthetic value, Salvia Amistad is also a favourite among pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it a great addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. It thrives in well-drained soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is also relatively low-maintenance, making it an excellent choice for gardeners of all skill levels.

Trimming: Trim Salvia 'Amistad' in early spring to remove any dead or damaged stems and to encourage bushy growth. Light pruning after the initial flowering period can promote a second flush of flowers.
Deadheading: Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong the flowering period and encourage new flowers. Pinch off the flower spikes just above the next set of leaves.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support vigorous growth and abundant flowering. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive foliage at the expense of flowers.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during dry periods. Salvia 'Amistad' prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate drought once established but will benefit from occasional deep watering.
Pest Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids and spider mites. If infestations occur, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Encourage beneficial insects to help keep pest populations under control.
Disease Management: Salvia 'Amistad' is generally disease-resistant but can be susceptible to powdery mildew and root rot. Ensure good air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and provide well-drained soil to prevent these issues. If necessary, treat with an appropriate fungicide.
