Pulsatilla vulgaris Heiler Hybrids, or pasque flower Heiler Hybrids, is a clump-forming perennial known for its soft, fern-like foliage and vibrant early spring flowers. The mix includes purple, red, pink, and white flowers with golden-yellow centres, followed by fluffy seed heads that add lasting visual interest.
Perfect for rockeries, alpine borders, cottage gardens, and mixed plantings, it thrives in full sun and light, free-draining soil. Avoid wet or heavy conditions, particularly in winter. Space 25 to 30 cm apart for natural groupings. Grows to 20–30 cm tall and wide, forming a soft mound with early-season colour and texture.
Trimming: After flowering, cut back spent flower stems and any untidy foliage to maintain a compact appearance. In late autumn, trim away dead leaves as the plant dies back naturally.
Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to prolong the flowering period and reduce self-seeding, unless seedheads are desired for ornamental interest.
Fertilising: Apply a light dressing of balanced fertiliser in early spring as growth begins. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which can lead to leggy growth.
Watering: Water during dry spells, especially while the plant is establishing and during active growth in spring. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant.
Pest Control: Rarely affected by pests, though slugs or snails may occasionally target young shoots—use bait or physical barriers as needed.
Disease Management: Generally disease-free. Ensure good drainage, particularly in winter, to prevent root rot. Remove any blackened or soft growth promptly.
