Pulmonaria Cobalt
Notify MePulmonaria 'Cobalt' is a compact, clump-forming perennial known for its striking cobalt-blue flowers that appear in late winter to early spring. The flowers emerge above a mound of deep green leaves lightly spotted with silver, adding interest even after flowering. Typically growing to 25 to 30 cm high and 30 to 40 cm wide, it is ideal for cottage, woodland, and shaded border garden styles.
Plant in partial to full shade with moist, humus-rich, free-draining soil. Space plants 30 to 40 cm apart to allow for natural clump development. Cut back old leaves after flowering to encourage fresh growth. Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. A hardy, low-maintenance perennial that brings early colour and texture to shaded garden areas.
Trimming: After flowering in spring, cut back spent flower stems and any tired or damaged foliage to encourage fresh new leaf growth and maintain a tidy appearance.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers promptly to prevent self-seeding and focus energy back into the plant’s foliage.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new growth emerges. In poor soils, a light top-up after flowering may help maintain vigour.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and during dry spells. Pulmonaria ‘Cobalt’ prefers consistently moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
Pest Control: Watch for slugs and snails, which may damage young leaves. Use organic controls or traps where needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow to prevent powdery mildew, a common issue in humid or crowded conditions. Avoid overhead watering, and remove any affected or yellowing leaves promptly. Divide clumps every 3-4 years to maintain plant health and vigour.
