Notify MePrimula Belarina Buttercup is a compact, clump-forming perennial celebrated for its fully double, butter-yellow flowers that resemble miniature roses. Flowering from late winter through early spring, it brings cheerful colour to the garden during the cooler months. With tidy green foliage and a neat growth habit of around 15-20 cm high and wide, it’s perfect for containers, edging, or planting en masse in cottage, woodland, or shaded courtyard gardens.
Thrives in partial shade with moist, well-draining, humus-rich soil. Space plants 20-25 cm apart to allow for natural clumping and good airflow. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage prolonged flowering.
Trimming: Remove faded flower stems and tatty foliage regularly to keep the plant tidy and encourage further flowering. Cut back spent foliage in late autumn if needed.
Deadheading: Deadhead frequently to promote continuous flowering and prevent energy going into seed production.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2-4 weeks during the flowering season to support strong blooms and healthy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in spring and early summer. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged-mulching can help retain moisture.
Pest Control: Watch for slugs and snails, especially in damp conditions. Use organic controls or physical barriers to protect new growth.
Disease Management: Primulas can be prone to crown rot and mildew in overly wet or humid conditions. Ensure good drainage and airflow, remove affected foliage promptly, and avoid overhead watering.
