Primula auricula
Notify MePrimula auricula is a compact, clump-forming perennial prized for its velvety, grey-green foliage and striking spring flowers. The blooms appear in mid to late spring and are held above the foliage in neat clusters, showcasing a wide variety of colours including yellow, burgundy, purple, and red, often with contrasting centres or a distinctive white ring (farina). Growing to around 15 to 20 cm high and wide, it is ideal for alpine, rock, woodland, and cottage garden styles, as well as containers and troughs.
Plant in partial shade with moist, free-draining, humus-rich soil. Protect from excessive winter wet and hot afternoon sun. Space plants 20 to 25 cm apart for edging or grouped displays. Deadhead after flowering to tidy and encourage new growth, and divide clumps every few years to maintain health. A collectable and ornamental perennial that brings bold, early-season colour to sheltered garden spaces.
Trimming: Remove spent flower stems and any faded or yellowing leaves after flowering to maintain a compact rosette and encourage healthy new growth. In autumn, tidy up any dead foliage before winter sets in.
Deadheading: Regular deadheading will prolong flowering and reduce unwanted self-seeding, especially in display collections.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a low-strength, balanced liquid fertiliser. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which can lead to soft, leggy growth. A second light feed after flowering can support continued health.
Watering: Water consistently in spring and early summer, especially during dry spells. Primula auricula prefers moist, well-drained soil. Avoid waterlogging and do not allow the crown to remain wet, particularly in cold weather.
Pest Control: Watch for vine weevil in pots (check for larvae in soil), as well as aphids and slugs. Use organic slug traps and treat aphids early with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent powdery mildew and grey mould. Avoid overhead watering, particularly in humid conditions. Remove any diseased or discoloured foliage promptly to prevent spread.
