Pleioblastus viridistriatus
Notify MePleioblastus viridistriatus, also known as kamuro-zasa, is a compact evergreen bamboo with striking variegated foliage. Its dense colony of purplish-green canes supports narrow leaves up to 20cm long, displaying vibrant yellow and green stripes. The foliage is most intensely coloured in full sun, adding a bright, textural element to the garden.
Ideal for ground cover, pots, and planter boxes, this bamboo thrives in full sun to partial shade. Prefers well-draining soil and regular watering, especially in dry periods. Cutting it back to ground level in winter encourages fresh, lush growth in spring. A low-growing, running variety, it reaches a mature height of around 2m, forming a dense, decorative feature in any garden.
Trimming: Trim back any dead or damaged canes in late winter or early spring to maintain a neat appearance. Regular trimming can help control the plant's size and spread. Cut back to ground level if the plant becomes too tall or leggy.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth. A second application in midsummer can be beneficial, especially in poor soil conditions.
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Pleioblastus viridistriatus is moderately drought-tolerant but will perform best with consistent moisture. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but keep an eye out for common pests like aphids or mites. Treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.
Disease Management: This bamboo is typically disease-resistant. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues and avoid overhead watering. If fungal diseases such as leaf spot occur, remove affected foliage and treat with an appropriate fungicide. Regularly inspect the plant and maintain its health through proper watering and fertilising to reduce the risk of disease.
