Notify MeLancaster Imp is a herbaceous peony admired for its large, fully double creamy white flowers with a soft sheen and a gentle fragrance. Flowering in late spring to early summer, the elegant flowers are carried on sturdy stems above rich green foliage, creating a timeless and graceful garden display.
Perfect for cottage, formal, and cut-flower gardens, Lancaster Imp is ideal for borders, feature planting, or massed displays. It thrives in full sun to light shade with fertile, free-draining soil and benefits from a cool winter period to promote strong flowering. Space approximately 80 cm to 1 metre apart for mature plantings.
Forms a rounded, bushy plant reaching around 80 to 90 cm high and 70 to 90 cm wide.
Trimming: Cut back flower stems after flowering to just above a healthy leaf set. In late autumn, once the foliage has completely died back, cut all stems to ground level and remove debris to prevent overwintering diseases.
Deadheading: Recommended. Remove spent flowers promptly to maintain a tidy appearance and help the plant direct energy into root and bud development.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new growth emerges. A second application after flowering can support strong root growth and improved flowering the following season.
Watering: Water deeply during dry periods, especially during flowering and active growth. Peonies thrive in moist, free-draining soil. Avoid waterlogging, particularly around the crown.
Pest Control: Typically pest-free. Occasionally check for aphids or thrips on flower heads and young shoots. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Susceptible to botrytis blight in damp or humid conditions. Remove and dispose of any blackened or diseased plant parts. Maintain good airflow, avoid overhead watering, and clear dead foliage in autumn to reduce fungal risk.
