Irwin Altman is a distinguished herbaceous peony admired for its large, fully double flowers in a warm, rose-pink shade with softly ruffled petals and a delicate fragrance. Flowering in late spring to early summer, the lush, full flowers stand proudly above dark green foliage, bringing refined beauty and texture to garden borders and floral arrangements.
Ideal for cottage, formal, and cut-flower gardens, Irwin Altman is perfect for borders, feature planting, or grouping in perennial beds. It thrives in full sun to light shade with fertile, free-draining soil and benefits from a cool winter period to promote consistent flowering. Space approximately 80 cm to 1 metre apart for mature growth.
Forms a rounded, bushy plant reaching around 80 to 90 cm high and 70 to 90 cm wide.
Trimming: Cut back flower stems after flowering to just above a strong set of leaves. In late autumn, once the foliage has died back naturally, cut all stems to ground level and remove debris to help prevent disease.
Deadheading: Recommended. Remove spent flowers promptly to keep the plant looking tidy and to encourage energy to go into root and bud development for the next season.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new shoots emerge. A second application after flowering can support strong root growth and next year's flower production.
Watering: Water deeply during dry spells, particularly while the plant is flowering and actively growing. Peonies prefer moist, free-draining soil. Avoid waterlogging, especially around the crown.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally monitor for aphids or thrips on new growth and flower heads. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Botrytis blight can occur in humid or wet conditions. Remove any affected stems or leaves promptly. Avoid overhead watering, ensure good airflow around the plant and clear away dead foliage in autumn to reduce the risk of fungal infection.
