Peony Henry St Clair

Henry St Clair is a vibrant herbaceous peony featuring large, semi-double to double flowers in a rich scarlet-red shade with a soft sheen. Flowering in late spring to early summer, the striking red petals and light fragrance make it an eye-catching addition to borders and cut-flower arrangements.

Perfect for cottage, formal, and perennial gardens, Henry St Clair is ideal for borders, feature planting, or mass displays. It thrives in full sun to light shade with fertile, free-draining soil and benefits from a cool winter period to encourage reliable flowering. Space approximately 80 cm to 1 metre apart for mature clumps.

Forms a rounded, bushy plant reaching around 80 to 90 cm high and 70 to 90 cm wide.

Trimming: Cut back flower stems after flowering to just above a healthy leaf to keep the plant tidy. In late autumn, once the foliage has completely died back, cut all stems to ground level and clear away debris to minimise the risk of disease.

Deadheading: Recommended. Remove spent flowers promptly to maintain a neat appearance and help the plant focus energy on root and bud development rather than seed formation.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new shoots emerge. A second feed after flowering will support strong root growth and prepare the plant for the following year.

Watering: Water deeply and regularly during dry periods, especially while the plant is actively growing and flowering. Peonies prefer moist, well-drained soil. Avoid overwatering or waterlogged conditions.

Pest Control: Typically pest-free. Occasionally monitor for aphids or thrips on young shoots and flower heads. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if required.

Disease Management: Susceptible to botrytis blight in damp or humid conditions. Remove and dispose of any affected stems or foliage. Provide good airflow, avoid overhead watering and clean up dead plant material in autumn to reduce fungal risks.
