Peony Buff Beauty
Peony Buff Beauty is a captivating herbaceous perennial known for its large, soft apricot-yellow double flowers that emerge in late spring to early summer. Each flower is richly textured and subtly fragrant, sitting atop sturdy stems framed by deep green, finely divided foliage. As the plant matures, the flowers gently fade to a creamy blush, adding depth and seasonal interest to mixed borders.
This peony is ideal for cottage gardens, perennial borders, and as a standout feature in formal or informal planting schemes. It also works well as a cut flower thanks to its strong stems and generous flowering display.
Plant in full sun with free-draining, fertile soil that retains some moisture, avoiding overly wet or compacted ground. Space plants 60–90 cm apart to allow airflow and room for future growth. Mulching in winter can help protect developing buds and support healthy flowering in the following season.
Mature size: Reaches approximately 80–90 cm tall and 60–90 cm wide when fully established.
Trimming: Cut back foliage to ground level in late autumn after it has died down naturally. This helps prevent overwintering pests and diseases. Avoid disturbing the crown when trimming.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers promptly during the flowering season to encourage tidy growth and reduce the risk of fungal issues.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new shoots emerge. A second light feed after flowering can support root development. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which may promote foliage at the expense of flowers.
Watering: Water deeply during prolonged dry spells, especially in the first couple of years while establishing. Mature plants are relatively drought-tolerant but benefit from consistent moisture during bud formation.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though aphids may occasionally target young shoots. Use a strong water spray or insecticidal soap if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of peony wilt (Botrytis), particularly in wet or humid conditions. Symptoms include blackened buds and stems. Remove and destroy affected parts promptly and ensure good air circulation around the plant. Avoid overhead watering.
