Notify MeBaroness Schroeder is a classic herbaceous peony admired for its large, fully double creamy white flowers that open from pale pink buds in late spring to early summer. The richly perfumed flowers stand tall on strong stems above lush, dark green foliage, creating a timeless and romantic garden feature.
Ideal for cottage, formal, and cut-flower gardens, Baroness Schroeder is perfect for borders, feature planting, or as a statement in perennial beds. It thrives in full sun to light shade with fertile, free-draining soil and benefits from a cool winter period to promote strong flowering. Space approximately 80 cm to 1 metre apart for mature plantings.
Forms a rounded, bushy plant reaching around 80 to 90 cm high and 70 to 90 cm wide.
Trimming: Cut back flower stems after flowering to just above a leaf node to tidy the plant. In autumn, once the foliage has died back naturally, cut all stems to ground level and remove the debris to reduce disease risk.
Deadheading: Recommended. Remove spent flowers promptly to improve appearance and prevent seed formation, which can divert energy from root development.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring as new growth emerges. A second application just after flowering can support strong root and bud development for the following season.
Watering: Water regularly during dry spells, especially while the plant is actively growing and flowering. Peonies prefer deep, infrequent watering rather than shallow, frequent watering. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent waterlogging.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally monitor for aphids and thrips on flower buds. Use insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Susceptible to botrytis blight in humid or wet conditions. Remove and dispose of any affected stems or leaves. Avoid overhead watering and ensure good air circulation. Clear away dead foliage in autumn to reduce the risk of overwintering fungal spores.
