Penstemon Huskers Red
Notify MePenstemon 'Huskers Red' is a hardy, clump-forming perennial admired for its striking combination of burgundy-tinged foliage and tall spikes of white to pale pink tubular flowers. Flowering from late spring through summer, the upright flower stems rise above the dark green to reddish leaves, attracting bees and other pollinators. Growing to around 70 to 90 cm high and 30 to 40 cm wide, it suits cottage, prairie, wildlife-friendly, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Tolerates dry conditions once established and performs best in moderately fertile sites. Space plants 30 to 40 cm apart for airflow and mature spread. Remove spent flower spikes to encourage continued flowering and cut back in late autumn or early spring. A long-flowering, easy-care perennial that brings contrast, colour, and pollinator interest to sunny garden beds.
Trimming: Cut back spent flower stems after flowering to encourage a second flush and keep the plant tidy. In late autumn or early spring, trim back old growth to just above the base to rejuvenate the plant and promote strong new shoots.
Deadheading: Regular deadheading will prolong the flowering period and improve the plant’s overall appearance.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. In poor soils, a light liquid feed during flowering can support continued blooms and healthy foliage.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Penstemon ‘Husker’s Red’ is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Prefers well-drained soil.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, aphids or slugs may appear - treat with insecticidal soap or organic controls as needed.
Disease Management: Provide good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of powdery mildew or root rot. Remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly. Divide every few years to maintain vigour and prevent congestion.
