Penstemon Electric Blue
Penstemon heterophyllus Electric Blue is a stunning perennial with vivid, tubular neon-blue flowers. These bee loving flowers rise on slender stems from late spring through summer above a mound of narrow, semi-evergreen foliage, adding height and movement to garden spaces.
Perfect for mixed borders, rock gardens, or cottage gardens, where its dazzling flowers bring a bold pop of colour. It pairs beautifully with other sun-loving perennials, such as salvias, echinaceas, and coreopsis, creating dynamic and lively planting schemes. Thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil, including sandy or gravelly types. It tolerates poorer soils and is drought-tolerant once established. Hardy and low-maintenace.
Space plants 40–50 cm apart. Reaches a height of 50–60 cm and spreads to around 40–50 cm.
Trimming: In late autumn or early spring, cut back old flower spikes and stems to ground level to encourage fresh growth. Lightly trim throughout the growing season to maintain a tidy shape.
Deadheading: Regularly remove faded flowers to prolong flowering and encourage continuous blooms throughout the season.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth and flowering. Avoid excessive feeding, as it can lead to lush foliage at the expense of flowers.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and during prolonged dry spells. Penstemons prefer well-drained soil and are drought-tolerant once established.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though slugs and snails may occasionally attack young plants. Use organic controls like traps or barriers as needed.
Disease Management: Prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew by ensuring good air circulation and avoiding waterlogged soil. Remove any diseased plant material promptly.
