Monarda Leading Lady Plum

Monarda Leading Lady Plum is a compact, early-flowering perennial prized for its vibrant plum-purple flowers and aromatic green foliage. Flowering from late spring into mid-summer, its bold, shaggy blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. With a tidy, upright habit reaching around 30-40 cm high and 40-50 cm wide, it’s well-suited to cottage, prairie, and pollinator-focused garden styles.

Plant in full sun to light shade with moist, well-draining soil. Space plants 30-40 cm apart for healthy airflow and to help prevent powdery mildew. Deadhead to extend the flowering season, and cut back after flowering to encourage fresh growth. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Trimming: Trim back spent flower stems after the first flush to encourage repeat flowering and a more compact habit. In late autumn or early winter, cut back all stems to just above ground level once the foliage dies back.

Deadheading: Regularly remove faded flowers to extend the flowering season and prevent self-seeding.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, a mid-season liquid feed can help support continued flowering and strong growth.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and dry periods. Monarda prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil-mulching helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pest Control: Monitor for spider mites and aphids, particularly in hot, dry conditions. Treat infestations early with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Disease Management: Monarda can be prone to powdery mildew. Ensure good air circulation by avoiding overcrowding, water at the base of the plant, and remove affected foliage promptly. Choose a sunny position with good drainage to reduce disease risk.
