Lobelia physaloides

Lobelia physaloides is a low-growing, spreading perennial native to New Zealand, valued for its soft green foliage and small blue to violet flowers that appear from spring to early summer. Its mat-forming habit makes it ideal for groundcover, rock gardens, and native or damp, shaded garden areas.

Plant in partial shade with moist, free-draining soil. Prefers consistent moisture and protection from harsh sun. Tolerates light frost and benefits from mulching in dry periods. Space plants 30 to 40 centimetres apart for groundcover or grouped planting.

Grows to around 15 to 20 centimetres tall and spreads up to 60 centimetres wide.

Trimming: Cut back spent flower stems after flowering to encourage fresh growth and maintain a tidy form. In late autumn, trim the plant down to ground level if foliage begins to decline.

Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to prolong flowering and prevent unwanted self-seeding.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. For continued performance, supplement with a liquid feed every four to six weeks during the growing and flowering season.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during establishment and warm, dry periods. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, but ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogging.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Monitor for aphids or caterpillars on tender new growth and treat with insecticidal soap if needed.

Disease Management: Ensure good airflow to reduce the risk of mildew or fungal leaf spots. Avoid overhead watering and remove any affected foliage promptly. Use free-draining soil to help prevent root issues.
