Liatris Kobold

Liatris spicata Kobold, commonly known as Blazing Star, is a compact, clump-forming perennial with tall, bottlebrush-like spikes of vibrant lavender-purple flowers. Flowering from mid to late summer, the flowers open from the top down, creating a unique and eye-catching display and are great for cutting fresh or dried. The slender, grass-like foliage forms a neat mound at the base.

Ideal for mixed borders, prairie-style gardens, and wildflower meadows. Its upright flower spikes make it a great choice for adding height and structure to cottage gardens and contemporary designs. It pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses and perennials like coneflowers, rudbeckias, and salvias. Plant in full sun for the best flowering performance. It thrives in well-drained soil and adapts to a variety of soil types, including sandy or clay soils. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering.

Space plants approximately 30–40 cm apart to allow for their natural upright habit and to prevent overcrowding in mixed plantings. Reaches a height of 50–60 cm, with a spread of 30–40 cm.

Trimming: Cut back flower stems to ground level in late autumn or early spring to tidy up the plant and prepare it for new growth.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower spikes during the flowering season to encourage more blooms and prevent self-seeding if undesired.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. Over-fertilising should be avoided as Liatris thrives in lean soils.
Watering: Water deeply during dry periods, especially during the establishment phase. Mature plants are drought-tolerant but appreciate occasional watering in extended droughts.
Pest Control: Rarely affected by pests, but inspect for aphids or spider mites. Use insecticidal soap or a strong spray of water if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Ensure well-drained soil to prevent root rot. Avoid overhead watering to minimise the risk of fungal diseases, such as powdery mildew.
This compact variety is perfect for borders or wildlife-friendly gardens, producing tall spikes of vibrant purple flowers that attract pollinators and add vertical interest to sunny spaces.
