Lavender Major

Lavender Major is a compact, aromatic shrub with grey-green foliage and dense spikes of deep purple flowers. Flowering from late Spring through Summer, this variety is valued for its strong colour, fragrant foliage, and tidy, rounded growth habit. It attracts pollinators and offers long-lasting garden interest in warmer months.

Ideal for borders, low hedging, rockeries, or container planting. Complements Mediterranean, cottage, coastal, and formal garden styles.

Thrives in full sun with free-draining soil. Drought-tolerant once established and dislikes heavy or waterlogged conditions. Space plants about 40–50 cm apart to allow for airflow and shaping.

Forms a rounded shrub reaching approximately 60–70 cm tall and wide.

Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact, bushy shape and encourage repeat flowering. A harder prune in late summer or early autumn (avoiding cutting into old wood) will help prevent the plant from becoming woody and leggy.

Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flower spikes to promote continued flowering and maintain a tidy appearance.

Fertilising: Apply a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertiliser in spring. Avoid rich or frequent feeding, as it can reduce flowering and lead to excessive leafy growth.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment, then sparingly once established. Lavender prefers dry conditions and is highly drought-tolerant. Avoid overwatering, particularly in humid or cool weather.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Occasionally, aphids may appear on new growth—treat with insecticidal soap if needed.

Disease Management: Watch for root rot and fungal diseases in poorly drained or overly damp conditions. Ensure good air circulation and plant in well-draining soil. Remove any diseased foliage promptly and avoid overhead watering.
