Kniphofia Orange Crush

Kniphofia 'Orange Crush' is a compact, clump-forming perennial admired for its vibrant flower spikes that shift from deep orange at the top to golden-yellow at the base. Flowering from mid to late summer, the upright flower heads rise above narrow, arching green foliage, adding vertical colour and attracting birds and pollinators. Growing to around 60 to 80 cm high and 40 to 50 cm wide, it suits gravel, coastal, prairie and contemporary garden styles.

Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Drought-tolerant and wind-hardy once established. Space plants 40 to 50 cm apart for airflow and mature spread. Deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage further flowering and remove old foliage in early spring. A bold yet compact perennial that delivers strong seasonal colour and structure to sunny garden beds.

Trimming: Remove spent flower spikes at the base after flowering to tidy the plant and encourage further blooms. In late winter or early spring, cut back old or damaged foliage to make way for fresh new growth.

Deadheading: Regularly deadhead to extend the flowering season and prevent self-seeding.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils or containers, a mid-season liquid feed can help promote prolonged flowering and healthy foliage.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Kniphofia ‘Orange Crush’ is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods. Requires well-drained soil to prevent crown rot.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Aphids may occasionally target flower stems - treat early with insecticidal soap if necessary.

Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal issues, particularly crown and root rot. Remove any discoloured or dead foliage promptly and plant in free-draining soil. Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour.
