Hosta fortunei
Hosta fortunei is a classic, clump-forming perennial admired for its broad, heart-shaped leaves in shades of deep green to blue-green, often with subtle veining or lighter margins depending on the form. In mid to late summer, tall stems carry soft lavender to pale purple flowers above the dense foliage, attracting bees and adding vertical interest. Typically growing 50-60 cm high and spreading 60-90 cm wide, it’s ideal for shaded borders, woodland, and cottage garden styles.
Plant in partial to full shade with moist, humus-rich, free-draining soil. Space plants 50-70 cm apart to allow for mature spread and airflow. Mulch annually to retain moisture and reduce weed growth. Protect young shoots from slugs and snails in spring. Cut back flower stems after flowering and tidy foliage in late autumn. A hardy, low-maintenance plant that brings lush texture and seasonal interest to shaded garden areas.
Trimming: Remove damaged or slug-damaged leaves as they appear. In late autumn, cut all foliage back to ground level once it has fully died down.
Deadheading: Not required, but removing spent flower stalks after flowering helps maintain a neat appearance and allows the plant to conserve energy for foliage and root growth.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poorer soils, a liquid feed mid-season can promote strong, lush foliage.
Watering: Water regularly during dry spells and especially through the growing season. Hosta fortunei prefers consistently moist, free-draining soil. Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and protect roots, keeping mulch clear of the crown.
Pest Control: Watch for slugs and snails, especially on young leaves. Use organic barriers, traps, or pellets as needed. In pots, monitor for vine weevil larvae.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to minimise the risk of leaf spot and crown rot. Remove any yellowing or diseased foliage promptly, and ensure soil drains well to avoid root problems.
