Hosta Blue Mammoth
Notify MeHosta Blue Mammoth is a large, clump-forming perennial admired for its impressive, deeply veined blue-grey leaves that form a bold, architectural mound. In mid to late summer, it produces tall stems of pale lavender flowers that rise above the striking foliage. Reaching around 60-70 cm high and spreading up to 120 cm wide, it makes a dramatic focal point in shaded borders, woodland gardens, and large containers.
Thrives in partial to full shade with moist, humus-rich, well-draining soil. Space plants 90-100 cm apart to accommodate their mature size. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep an eye out for slugs and snails in spring. Low-maintenance and highly effective for creating texture and contrast in shaded areas.
Trimming: Remove spent flower stalks after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance. In late autumn, cut back all dead or yellowing foliage to ground level as the plant enters dormancy.
Deadheading: Not required for performance, but removing faded flowers can enhance overall appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring when new growth emerges. In nutrient-poor soils, a mid-summer top-up can help support large leaf growth.
Watering: Water deeply and consistently, especially during dry spells. Hosta ‘Blue Mammoth’ prefers moist, well-drained soil. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pest Control: Very susceptible to slugs and snails-look for holes in leaves and use organic slug pellets, copper tape, or beer traps to control them.
Disease Management: Avoid overhead watering and ensure good spacing to prevent fungal issues like anthracnose and crown rot. Remove and discard affected foliage promptly, and improve drainage if necessary.
