Heucherella Catching Fire

Heucherella Catching Fire is a striking, compact perennial known for its vivid foliage display. The large, deeply lobed lime-green leaves are dramatically overlaid with bold, dark red veining, creating a fiery contrast that holds colour throughout the seasons. In late spring to early summer, slender stems carry small, soft white flowers above the foliage. Reaching approximately 25-30 cm high and 40-45 cm wide, it adds year-round interest to woodland, cottage, and shaded courtyard gardens.

Plant in partial to full shade with moist, well-draining, humus-rich soil. Space plants 30-40 cm apart for full coverage and airflow. Mulch annually to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Ideal for underplanting, edging, or container displays. Protect from harsh afternoon sun to preserve leaf colour.

Trimming: Remove old or damaged leaves throughout the year to keep the plant tidy and encourage fresh growth. In early spring, cut back any tired foliage to make way for new growth.

Deadheading: Not strictly necessary, but removing spent flower stalks after blooming can improve appearance and may encourage a light rebloom.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser. In poor soils, a light mid-summer feed can support continued vigour and foliage colour.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment and dry spells. Heucherella prefers evenly moist, well-drained soil-avoid letting the soil dry out completely, especially in warmer weather.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but keep an eye out for vine weevils, which can damage roots. Use biological controls or insecticides if necessary.

Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal issues such as powdery mildew or crown rot. Remove any diseased or discoloured leaves promptly. Ensure soil is free-draining, especially in winter.
