Helleborus Ivory Prince boasts beautiful flowers which are ivory painted with rose and chartreuse coloring emerging as they age. Helleborus are a standout plant in the garden in late winter as they are one of the first plants to flower, giving the feeling that spring is just around the corner. Helleborus are a very low-maintenance plant that will keep giving year after year. They like a well-drained and shady spot in the garden.
Trimming: Remove old, tatty or damaged leaves in late autumn or as the flowers and fresh new foliage begin to emerge, so the blooms are easier to see and air can move freely around the plant. After flowering, cut away spent flower stems at the base.
Deadheading: Deadheading is worthwhile on Helleborus ‘Ivory Prince’. Once the flowers have finished, remove the old flowering stems to keep the plant tidy and encourage fresh basal growth.
Fertilising: Feed in spring and again in autumn with a balanced fertiliser, and top up with compost or other organic matter to support strong growth and reliable flowering. Avoid excessive feeding.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist while the plant is establishing, especially through its first growing season. Once established, it is fairly tolerant of short dry spells, but it performs best with regular moisture in well-drained, humus-rich soil and should not sit wet.
Pest control: Check new growth and flowers for aphids, and watch for slugs and snails on young foliage. Treat aphids early with a firm spray of water, insecticidal soap or neem, and use slug and snail control where damage is visible. Scale can also occur on stems and leaf undersides, so inspect hidden areas if the plant looks stressed.
Disease management: Watch for hellebore leaf spot, which shows as brown to black spots or blotches on leaves and stems and can lead to ragged foliage or stem collapse. Botrytis, crown rot and root rot can also develop in damp, poorly ventilated conditions. Remove and dispose of affected leaves and stems, avoid overhead watering, and improve airflow and drainage if problems appear. Hellebore black death is more serious and can cause black streaking and distorted growth, so badly affected plants should be removed.
