Helichrysum Graeme Paterson
Helichrysum 'Graeme Paterson' is a low-growing, evergreen ground cover valued for its fine, silvery-grey foliage and spreading habit. Though its flowering is modest and typically not the main feature, the soft-textured foliage provides year-round contrast and is especially effective when paired with bold greens or vibrant flowering plants. Growing to around 10-20 cm high and spreading up to 1 metre wide, it’s ideal for rockeries, dry borders, retaining walls, and Mediterranean or coastal garden styles.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Drought-tolerant and wind-hardy once established, making it excellent for exposed or coastal sites. Space plants 50-60 cm apart for ground coverage. Requires minimal maintenance-occasional trimming will help maintain a tidy shape and prevent it from becoming woody. Avoid overly wet or shaded conditions. A tough, attractive foliage plant that adds texture and silvery tone to dry, sunny garden spaces.
Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering or in early spring to maintain a compact, spreading habit and prevent the plant becoming woody or leggy. Regular light pruning encourages fresh growth and keeps the silvery foliage dense.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower heads can improve appearance and reduce self-seeding.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. This plant generally thrives in poorer soils, so avoid overfeeding, which can lead to soft, weak growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Helichrysum ‘Graeme Paterson’ is drought-tolerant and prefers well-drained soil. Avoid overwatering, especially in cooler months.
Pest Control: Typically pest-free. Occasionally, aphids may appear-treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root or stem rot. Avoid overhead watering and remove any discoloured or damaged foliage to maintain plant health. Suitable for hot, dry, and coastal conditions.
