Euphorbia Great Dixter

Euphorbia 'Great Dixter' is a striking, clump-forming perennial known for its tall, upright stems topped with large, lime-green flower heads (cyathia) that appear in spring and early summer. The bold foliage is grey-green and often flushed with red or bronze tones, particularly in cooler months. With an architectural form reaching around 90-120 cm high and 60-80 cm wide, it’s ideal for contemporary, Mediterranean, and dry garden styles.

Plant in full sun with well-draining soil, including poor or gravelly sites. Drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance. Space plants 50-60 cm apart for good airflow. Cut back stems to the base after flowering, taking care to avoid the irritant milky sap. Wear gloves when handling. Mulch annually to suppress weeds and retain moisture. A bold, low-maintenance plant that adds structure and long-lasting colour to sunny garden spaces.

Trimming: Cut back flowered stems to the base in late summer or autumn once flowering is finished, taking care not to damage new shoots at the base. In early spring, remove any winter-damaged or untidy growth to tidy the plant.

Deadheading: Not required, as flowering stems are typically removed entirely after bloom.

Fertilising: Apply a light dose of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring if soil is poor. Euphorbias are generally low-maintenance and do not require heavy feeding.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Euphorbia ‘Great Dixter’ is drought-tolerant and thrives in well-drained soil. Avoid overwatering, especially in winter.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, aphids or caterpillars may appear-treat with insecticidal soap if needed.

Disease Management: Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot and fungal issues. Avoid overhead watering and remove any affected foliage promptly. Wear gloves when handling-Euphorbia sap is toxic and can irritate skin and eyes.
